My Bear Season
This was a great bear season. I hunted a total of 7 days spread out through May and June 2016. Most of the hunts were spot and stalk, I never sat a tree stand. I saw a total of 11 different bears in person, passed on 2 bears under 30 yards. I did miss one bear at 28 yards, but that was better than wounding a bear. The next bear I finally shot was a dandy, but I ran out of blood after trailing him for 500 yards in the dark until 1am. I made a quartering away shot at 28 yards and the arrow was high and too far forward only hitting one lung, not good. The next morning I woke to the most ridiculous rain storm, but searched for my bear for 8 hours utilizing my GPS and the grid system. Finally I found my bear, with birds on him already. The night I was looking for my bear I heard wolves in the same drainage moaning and howling, looks like they found my bear before I did. There wasn't much left to the bear, my season was over. This is another reason why I dislike wolves, they're everywhere in North Idaho. They destroyed the meat, the hide, and birds already cleaned up... I wished I'd had found him the night of, even with a pack nearby I would have gotten him out of there. The next day my dad took out my 10 year old nephew and he shot his first bear, I am still smiling about how well he did. Big congrats Riley James! Maybe I can get a Washington bear this fall.
