Arizona Recap
Arizona Recap: Late season Arizona archery elk is a extremely difficult hunt. I would give it a 9 out 10 on a scale of difficulty. It's a 20 hour drive from my house to the unit I hunted. I drove it straight on the way down, literally only stopping for gas and bathroom breaks. A personal best. Opening day found me surrounded by hunters at my designated glassing spot. I pulled out after watching two hunters drop down the canyon after big bulls. I set up a new camp on top of a rim that stretches several miles. I stayed there for six days with one close call on day two. I was 69 yards from two 320 bulls and should have taken a shot, rather I tried to sneak a bit closer and they heard me through the dry pine forest floor. If the elk don't hear you coming, they will eventually smell you as the wind swirls like a mother in the canyon country. I also got to 150 yards above a 360 bull and had the wind switch while I was filming him through my phoneskope, great footage but he and the 5 other bulls he was with blew out. I moved camp on day 7 and found a new area that was far from roads and had a new batch of bulls to hunt. I spent day one studying them and their movements. That night I had really strong winds blow through camp nearly blowing over my tepee tent. That morning I had the same strong 20 mph winds which help keep a consistent wind in the canyons. I found a good bull feeding at the top of a mountain with 4 other bulls and I cut them off at first light. It was about a 1,000 feet of elevation and over a mile of hiking but I got right under this bull in about 45 minutes. I had a tremendous cross wind. I ranged him at 60 yards with no shot because all I could see was his rack as his body was covered by the tall scrub oak and manzanita. I made it to 50 yards, then 40 yards, then I took off my boots. Then I slowly worked in to 30 and finally 20 yards. The bull fed right by me at 10 yards and bedded down. I had to wait and pray that the wind would stay true. About thirty minutes of waiting the bull stood up to feed again and I drilled him at 10 yards. At first, he didn't know he was even shot, and then he saw me and bolted with an FMJ lodged in his opposite shoulder, the shot proved to be fatal. My friend Trent from Pinetop drove over two hours and helped me pack out the bull. He dropped everything and even brought me a hot pizza to fuel me up for the many trips of meat hauling. Trent, you are a true friend. img_2934 img_0974 img_0890 Monday 11/7/2016 1. Snatch 60% x 4 #135, 70% x 4 #155, 75% x 4 #168, 80% 2x4 80% #180 2. Snatch Pull 95% 4x3 #215 3.
