Thursday June 16th, 2016 REST DAY
Friday June 17th, 2016 BEAR HUNTING
So Thursday right after work I hopped in my truck and drove 100 miles to my cabin for a quick bear hunt. That night I spotted a monster black bear feeding into the timber from about 500 yards away. I couldn’t get him to come back out but it was the 5th bear spotted this year on my extremely limited days in the field.
Friday morning I loaded up my bike with bear bait, chainsaw, and headed out. Before I left I noticed my arrows were grouping about 6 inches to the left, so I made a quick adjustment and left in a hurry. I ended up baiting and then heading over to some elk country and put out some trail cameras for the summer in some hard to get to spots. I glassed several areas for bears along the way. That evening I found a beautiful cinnamon bear feeding along a clear cut. I waited patiently for the thermals to kick in and made my stock. I got to 28 yards before the bear busted me, but it stood its ground and gave me the stair down. I elected for a frontal shot at 28 yards and shot, my arrow sailed 6 inches to the right missing the bear completely, I was dumbfounded. I shot my bow into a dirt bank right afterwards to see if my bow was off and sure enough, I was hitting almost a foot to the right. I don’t know what the hell happened to my bow, but it’s not hitting its mark. I think it got pretty beat up while I road and hiked with it on my back all day. It is super frustrating to earn a shot opportunity only to squander it, but that’s why I love bowhunting. I drove home, tuned my bow, tightened down all my bolts and nuts, shot through paper, cataloged all my arrows, and spin tested each arrow as well. The devil is in the details and I will be better prepared next week when I head out for 4 days of bear hunting.
